Portrait Photography Lighting Tips

Aperture : F/6.3
Shutter Speed : 1/60 saat
ISO : 400
Focal Length : 130mm

Portrait Photography

Wikipedia define portrait photography as "photography of a person or group of people that displays the expression, personality, and mood of the subject. Like other types of portraiture, the focus of the photograph is usually the person's face, although the entire body and the background or context may be included."

Portrait photography can be done outdoors or indoors and they both require lighting be it ambient or flash. But for me, if you want to make great photos, then you should use both ambient and flash. Let me show you a creative portrait photography using both lighting.

The picture above is taken outdoor at a lake in Pengkalan Hulu. Lightings are from ambient (the sun) and 1 bare flash. I reduced the ambient lights and the flash lit my subject from behind thus creating the silhouette on the umbrella.

Here is another example:

In this setup, I used the sun (dimmed of course), 1 flash with umbrella on camera left and 1 flash on camera right to light the shrubs.

The Wedding of Fadzil dan Ina

As usual, I went to this wedding job with my lighting arsenal, softbox, umbrella and the usual stuff. but for this picture I used only one flash and shoot through umbrella, place on camera right. I had the bride lean on the wall and do the post above.

I also did a little post processing on the photo in photoshop whereby I added some grain. And by the way, I purposely left the flower on upper left for reasons I do not know of.

Sesi Fotografi Wan dan Siti

Here is a picture of Wan and Siti using 2 lights strobist technique. This is an outdoor session at around 5 pm at Taman DR. Bagi sesiapa yang akan berkahwin dan tahu pasal Taman DR ni, pergi le kat sana untuk ambik gambar, memang cantik tempatnya...

This strobist technique uses 2 flash, one placed at about 45 degree angle to the left of the bride and groom and another is placed behind them at about 45 degree to the right of them
